Chapter 17

Sofya

Liam stood in the photo, his hand around a woman. They were both dressed up and smiling. The woman's hair was dyed blue with pink streaks, small waves mixed them together. Liam wore a tie, a look I could have never thought he would entertain.

Movement downstairs took my attention away. I stuffed the photo into my pocket and snuck back to my bedroom. Audry would know who she was. Liam didn't look much different in the photo than he did now. It was recent.

In the bedroom, I opened the top drawer and moved the sweaters over. I went to stuff the photo in the drawer, concerned about Liam finding it on me if he undressed me. But as I was tucking the photo under a shirt, Liam came into the room.

His eyes focused on me, then moved to the photo. I was caught red handed. Thievery was officially crossed off the possible occupation list. I moved it behind my back and smiled. A move I was certain he saw right through.

"What do you have?" Liam pointed.

"Nothing," I answered quickly.

"That is the worst lie I ever heard." His eyes darkened in the most attractive way as he moved closer to me.

"I will only ask you one more time, Sofya," Liam whispered as he was inches from me. Our chests lightly brushed against each other. "What do you have behind your back?"

"I don't know what you are talking about," I responded. I knew I was riding thin ice. The darkness in his eyes only increased as I kept him from getting his answer. If he found it, what would he do to me? My mind ran away with all the possibilities, sexually and other. Allegedly he was a killer. Would he kill me over the photo? Over snooping?

Before my mind could continue into its darkest depths, he picked me up and threw me onto the bed. He easily pinned me, and snatched the photo from my hand.

His face fell from the lustful and playful expression. Instead, I saw an expression that I saw in myself every day. His eyes went blank, no one existed behind them anymore, and his shoulders slouched.

"Where…" His voice caught in his throat. He cleared it before speaking again. "Where did you get this?" He stood up and shook the photo.

I moved to sit up on the bed.

"Where, Sofya?" Liam shouted.

"Your...uh...Your room," I admitted. "Who is she?" I asked out of curiosity and a need to change the subject.

"No one."

"Bullshit," I responded and jumped to my feet.

"She is a past that I rather not relive." He dropped the photo face down on the nightstand. He rubbed the back of his neck as his body tensed.

"I know that look. I know it all too well, Liam." I kept my voice soft and low.

"Know what look?"

"How did you lose her?" I asked. I studied his furrowed eyebrows and tensed jaw. Inside his eyes, I saw the vacant, dead, and hollow space she left inside him. I was looking into a mirror that terrified me and called to me all at once.
